Surrogate motherhood is one of methods of infertility treatment with the help of assister reproductive technologies (ART), during which the embryos that are received in cycle of in vitro fertilization (IVF) are transferred into the uterus of the women who has no genetic links with the child for further carrying and delivery of the baby. In cycle of surrogates motherhood eggs of the genetic mother are fertilized with the sperm of the father (husband) and transfers into a uterus of a surrogate mother.


History of surrogate motherhood

Historically the traditional surrogacy appeared first.
The history of surrogate motherhood reaches ancient civilizations. First case of surrogate motherhood was known more than two thousand years ago. This story is described in Old Testament, when Sara, Abraham’s wife, being infertile, asked the servant to carry Abraham’s baby.

Also the case of surrogate motherhood is described in Sumerian Mesopotamia in the XVIII century BC where surrogacy was enshrined in the Code of Laws of the king of Hammurabi.


Surrogate motherhood today

Gestational surrogacy is the most widespread method of assisted reproductive technologies. It differs from traditional surrogate motherhood mainly because of the absence of any genetic link between a fetus and a surrogate mother. During conceiving Intended parents’ genetic material is used.

In legislation of foreign states the attitude to the institute of surrogate motherhood is ambiguous (from complete prohibition to legalization). It is caused by the cultural traditions, mental and ethical, legal and religious aspects.


Egg donation

Egg donation is used in cases when ovaries do not produce eggs (dysfunction, malformation, premature depletion of ovarian function, menopause) and also in cases of repeated unsuccessful IVF attempts with embryos of bad quality. Egg donation is used in case of risk in transferring genetic diseases.

Who can be a donor?

According to recommendation of ASRM (American Society of Reproductive Medicine) and ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology), donor should be till 32 years who has a good mental and physical health. The donors who had cancer, cordial, genetic diseases, venereal diseases, psychic diseases, alcoholism, drugs are not used in the program.

The surrogacy program can be applied when a genetic mother for one or more reasons is not able to carry a child. A surrogate mother is medically examined in conformity with the Order of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health The approval of directives for procedure in ART use.

A couple’s eggs and sperm are used in this program. Embryos received from IVF treatment are transferred into the body of another woman – the surrogate mother, who becomes pregnant.  During pregnancy, genetic parents take part in the evolution of their baby in the womb of another woman.    They take great care about its health, development and psychological state.
